Both acknowledgments communicate syntax-oriented processing outcomes. Their exact version, use, and error interpretation depend on the applicable implementation guide and partner agreement.
Correlate before diagnosing
Match acknowledgement control numbers and transaction context to the untouched original. A positive syntax acknowledgment is not proof of business acceptance, pricing, inventory, or partner-rule compliance.
Choose from the transaction version
Use the acknowledgment transaction defined by the trading relationship and the X12 version carried by the interchange. A 997 reports functional acknowledgment status; a 999 can report implementation-level syntax results. Neither substitutes for an application response that confirms whether an order, shipment, or invoice was accepted by the receiving business system.
